ATMOS Global™ presented its advanced ATMOS-5D™ forecasting and management platform at the Global Air Quality and Climate Change Conference, held from 14–19 March 2011 in Kona, Hawaii, USA. The presentation was titled "An Innovative Multi-Scale, Multi-Hazard Air Quality Impact Forecasting and Early-Warning Platform: Local Demand, Global Supply."

The conference examined the relationship between air quality and climate, with particular attention to the Asia-Pacific region. Key themes included air-quality trends in megacities, the interaction between air pollution and weather modification, changing regional pollution exposure under climate change and integrated approaches to air-quality and climate management. The program brought together leading scientists to assess existing knowledge, identify research gaps and consider how advances in science and technology could strengthen environmental management across East Asia and the Pacific Rim.

Valianatos, published in Clean Air and Environmental Quality, Volume 38, No. 3, August 2004.

These companion publications contributed to the advancement of air quality dispersion modelling through the development and evaluation of a convective function module within Ausplume. The work reflects an early contribution to the scientific and technical foundations of atmospheric modelling, environmental risk assessment and predictive decision-support systems. It forms part of the knowledge base underpinning ATMOS Global™'s long-standing focus on translating complex atmospheric science into practical intelligence for industry, government and environmental decision-makers.


Modelling Transport, Dispersion and Secondary Pollutant Formation of Emissions from Burning Vegetation Using Air Quality Dispersion Models, authored by Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos as the lead author, published by the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment, Fire Management Division (December 2003), Research Report No. 53.

Produced for the Victorian Government, this research applied advanced atmospheric modelling and environmental intelligence techniques to evaluate the transport, dispersion and transformation of emissions generated by vegetation burning. The publication represents an important early contribution to science-based smoke forecasting, environmental risk assessment and operational decision support for fire management agencies.

The report's foreword by Gary Morgan AFSM, Chief Fire Officer, Department of Sustainability and Environment, acknowledged Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos's knowledge, ability and contribution to what was described as ground-breaking work in the prediction and management of smoke. This work formed part of the foundations for Australia's first operational smoke forecasting capability and contributed to further national advances in smoke management, bushfire research and environmental decision-making.

As noted in the foreword, the project helped establish a platform for subsequent progress in smoke prediction and management, including the later development of major collaborative bushfire research initiatives involving government agencies, research institutions and scientific contributors across Australia. It forms part of the intellectual foundations that would later support ATMOS Global™'s evolution into a global advisory and innovation firm operating at the intersection of forecasting science, artificial intelligence, strategic intelligence and enterprise transformation.

Foreword to the smoke forecasting report by Gary Morgan AFSM

Application and Comparison of Ausplume and ADMS3 for Air Dispersion from Sources in the Downwind Cavity of Buildings, authored by Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos as the lead author, presented at the Clean Air Conference 2003, held in Newcastle, Australia, and published in the conference proceedings.

This conference paper evaluated and compared the performance of the Ausplume and ADMS3 air dispersion models for assessing emissions from sources located within the downwind cavity of buildings. The work contributed to the evaluation of modelling approaches for complex built-environment conditions, supporting more robust air quality assessment, regulatory decision-making and environmental risk management.


The Development of a Modelling System for Tasmania, authored by Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos as the lead author, presented at the Clean Air Conference 2002, held in Christchurch, New Zealand, and published in the conference proceedings.

This conference paper examined the development of an advanced atmospheric dispersion modelling system for Tasmania, designed to support the prediction and management of air quality impacts from multiple emission sources. The work supported the development of science-based environmental intelligence, forecasting capability and decision-support systems, providing government agencies with enhanced tools for environmental planning, risk assessment and operational decision-making.


Evaluation of the King Island Wildfire Effects on Ozone During a Smoke Pollution Event in Melbourne, authored by Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos as the lead author, presented at the Clean Air Conference 2002, held in Christchurch, New Zealand, and published in the conference proceedings.

This conference paper examined the influence of smoke emissions from the King Island wildfire on ozone concentrations during a smoke pollution event affecting Melbourne. The work contributed to a deeper understanding of the interaction between wildfire emissions, atmospheric chemistry and urban air quality, supporting the development of science-based approaches to smoke impact assessment, environmental risk management and public health decision-making.


Contributions to PM10 Concentrations from the King Island (Tasmania) Wildfire During a Smoke Haze Episode in Melbourne, authored by Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos as the lead author, presented at the Joint Bushfire / Forest and Rural Fires Association of New Zealand (FRFANZ) Conference 2001, held in Christchurch, New Zealand, from 3–6 July 2001, and published in the conference proceedings.

This conference paper examined the contribution of smoke emissions from the King Island (Tasmania) wildfire to elevated PM10 concentrations recorded during a significant smoke haze episode in Melbourne. Using advanced atmospheric modelling and air quality analysis techniques, the study investigated the long-range transport of smoke and its impact on urban air quality. The work contributed to a broader understanding of transboundary smoke events, supporting the development of science-based approaches to air quality management, environmental risk assessment and operational decision-making.


Application of the Air Quality Dispersion Model (TAPM) for the Dispersion of Smoke: First Validation Trials and Sensitivity Analysis to Input Data, authored by Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos as the lead author, presented at the Joint Bushfire / Forest and Rural Fires Association of New Zealand (FRFANZ) Conference 2001, held in Christchurch, New Zealand, from 3–6 July 2001, and published in the conference proceedings.

This conference paper examined the application of The Air Pollution Model (TAPM) to forecasting the transport and dispersion of smoke generated by vegetation fires, including some of the first validation trials undertaken to assess its suitability for operational smoke forecasting. The work also considered the sensitivity of model outputs to input data, contributing to the advancement of science-based smoke prediction, environmental risk assessment and operational decision-support capabilities for fire, land-management and public health agencies.


Elements of a Comprehensive Smoke Management System, authored by Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos as the lead author, presented at Fire Conference 2000: The First National Congress on Fire Ecology, Prevention, and Management, held in San Diego, United States, from 27 November–1 December 2000, and published in the conference proceedings.

This conference paper examined the core elements required for a comprehensive smoke management system, including forecasting capability, air quality impact assessment, environmental risk evaluation and operational decision support. The work contributed to the development of integrated approaches for managing smoke impacts from fire, supporting agencies responsible for public safety, environmental stewardship and land-management decision-making.


The Victorian Smoke Management System: A Useful Tool in Predicting and Planning Wildland Fire Effects, authored by Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos as the lead author, presented at the Australian Fire Authorities Council (AFAC) 2000 Conference, held in Adelaide, Australia, from 8–10 September 2000, and published in the conference proceedings, General Stream, pp. 26–33.

This conference paper examined the Victorian smoke management system as a practical forecasting and decision-support tool for predicting and planning the effects of wildland fires. The work contributed to the development of science-based smoke forecasting, air quality impact assessment and operational planning capabilities for fire and emergency management agencies, forming part of the broader foundations for Australia's emerging smoke prediction and environmental intelligence capabilities.


The Proposed Future of the Australian Smoke Management System, authored by Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos, as the lead author, published as a technical report by the Fire Research Centre, Monash University (2000), prepared as a background document supporting the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre Proposal, 45 pages.

This technical report examined the future development and national expansion of Australia's smoke management capabilities, building on the operational forecasting systems developed during the late 1990s. Prepared in support of the Bushfire CRC proposal, the report outlined strategic directions for advancing smoke prediction, environmental intelligence, air quality management and decision-support systems for fire and emergency management agencies. The publication reflects an early contribution to the integration of forecasting science, environmental risk management and collaborative research frameworks at a national scale.


The Operational Smoke Management System in Victoria, authored by Dr. Orestis D. Valianatos as the lead author, presented at the AMOS 2000 Conference, held in Melbourne, Australia, from 7–9 February 2000, and published in the conference proceedings.
